Train FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is scale?

Model trains come in various sizes. Scale is generally referred to as the ratio of the size in relationship to the full size real train (prototype).

2. What scales (or sizes) are available?

The following scales are listed from largest to smallest ratio(s):

• G scale - Ratio 1:22.5; average length of freight car – 19 inches

• No. 1 scale - Ratio 1:32; average length of freight car – 18 Ύ inches

• On3 scale - Ratio 1:48; average length of freight car – 9 inches

• O scale - Ratio 1:48; average length of freight car – 12 ½ inches

• S scale - Ratio 1:64; average length of freight car – 9 Ό inches

• HOn3 scale - Ratio 1:87; average length of freight car – 5 inches

• N scale - Ratio 1:160; average length of freight car – 3 Ύ inches

• Z scale - Ratio 1:220; average length of freight car – 19 inches

3. What is track gauge?

Track gauge is the distance between the rails.

4. Which train set is the best for my child?

HO scale is the most popular scale; more than 70% of all model railroaders run HO scale trains. Next is N Scale, which is used by approximately 12% of all model railroaders. The remaining model railroaders run the other scales. Train set selection depends upon the age and development of the child as well as their level of interest in trains.

5. How do the trains run?

The trains run through electrical current. Most scales run on Direct Current (DC), although some Lionel & O gauge trains run on Alternating Current (AC). A transformer is necessary to convert household current into usable DC current to make the trains run. All new train sets include a transformer.

6. How do I know what to buy for a friend?

Ask your friend what they like. Listen for keywords such as “Lionel, HO, N, American Flyer, etc.” Each of these are clues to the scale, style of trains.
